PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page and used by the Google Internet search engine, that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set.
Ok now that you've completely fallen asleep after wikipedia's definition above, let's talk about pagerank in layman's terms. PageRank is what Google uses to determine the importance of a web page. It's one of many factors used to determine which pages appear on page one in search results. In my recent discussions with some sponsors, they are using a blog's pagerank to determine payment and working with a blogger IN ADDITION to all the blog stats provided by google analytics. The number range is from 1-10, with 10 being the highest. Obviously sites like Facebook, youtube, google.com are a 9/10 so don't stress if you aren't at a 9/10!
However it is important to know what your page is ranked. Almost each browser has a way for you to see the page rank of whatever site you are on, by simply adding an "add-on" to your browser toolbar, you can view your sites page rank and that of any site you visit.
Go to Tools and then Add-Ons. Search pagerank and choose PageRank for Firefox
|Location of Pagerank number once it's enabled on Mozilla|
While on the google chrome browser, go to the Chrome Web Store, search pagerank and choose from the plethora of options. I personally chose the pagerank status. It's fast and it shows more than just Google PageRank it shows AlexaRank and a plethora of other information on the site you are on at the time.
After the extension is installed it will be located in the upper right corner of the browser page. if you click on it, you get a wealth of information about the site related to pageranks.
Stay in tthe know! Know your stats!
